Герман Бабенков, заведующий инфекционным отделением ЦРБ г. Похвистнево: «Поступило 20 человек. Лекарств достаточно, всего хватает, нам город помог в связи вот с этой вспышкой. Медикаменты все есть необходимые».
Татьяна Савина, врач-эпидемиолог Центра гигиены и эпидемиологии ФГУЗ Похвистневского района: «Мы никак не можем это сделать, никак! Это природный очаг! Все лесные массивы обработать практически невозможно. Ну не возможно это сделать».

WHO bird flu expert says 300 dead in China, government hiding the truth
A front page article in the respected German newspaper Franffurter Allaemeine, yesterday said that Dr. Masato Tashiro, a Japanese WHO consultant, believed that China has had 300 human deaths from bird flu and is hiding the true extent of the disease from the rest of the world.
The translated story reports1 2 that Dr. Masato Tashiro, director of the WHO Collaborating Center on Influenza at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, and head of the Department of Virology of the National Institute of Infectious Disease (Japan), astonished colleagues with the information during a speech at a recent retirement dinner for a fellow virologist, Hans-Dieter Klenk.
Having just returned from the Hunan province of China on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO), the virologist claimed that a reliable source had provided him with details of the true nature of the H5N1 virus in China. "We are systematically deceived" [by China], he is reported to have said. The information is very similar to the translated story from the pro-democracy Chinese site, Boxun, which we published last week. That story has now been given added credibility, and it must be only a matter of time before an English-speaking news agency starts seriously questioning Beijing. Some honesty from China will hopefully follow.
This is our translation of the article:
At first nobody in the hall knew what the numbers could mean. A simple diagram, full of number blocks, which were enclosed by Chinese characters at the left and top margin. People with questions in their eyes. Then virus researcher Masato Tashiro opened his colleagues' eyes. "What you see here, is an unofficial, unpublished report from China for the H5N1 infection situation with humans." A systematic list, which was passed on to him by a reliable source when he entered China a few days ago.
Tashiro was there on behalf of the World Health Organization (WHO) in the Hunan province. His laboratory, at the National institute for Infection Research in Tokyo, had been particularly entrusted as one of the Asian points of contact for the United Nations with investigations to the bird flu in Asia and in China. Now he stood there in lecture room III of the University of Marburg Clinic, before some the most outstanding virologists in the world at the weekend and could obviously not silently release him into his pension. Instead of discharging the German retiring influenza virologist, Hans's Dieter Klenk, he shocked the meeting with his unauthorised data souvenir from inside China.
If the mysterious Chinese informant is certain and what its mysterious informant had noted in the document is correct, the bird flu epidemic disease places all statistics collected so far in China into the shade. Officially the WHO register shows 71 victims worldwide, with about double that figure from close contact with poultry. China indicates just three infected. The secrecy and the repressive-politics of the Peking government is still causing concern as [it was] at the beginning of the SARS epidemic disease, complained Tashiro. China is playing with fire. At least five medical co-workers, who should report on the situation in the provinces were arrested, publication-willing researchers were threatened with punishments. [If] Scarcely eight years before H5N1, for the first time, took some thousand poultry victims and a few humans in Hong Kong, why should the virus not hit China over all these years [too], when Asia is already in their third wave? A respected Japanese scientist, who works with the World Health Organization, says 300 people have died of H5N1 bird flu in China, including seven cases caused by human-to-human transmission.
He says he was given the information in confidence by Chinese colleagues who have been threatened with arrest if they disclosed the extent of the problem.
The allegations, which he revealed at a meeting in Germany, contrast sharply with Chinas official position. It reports three confirmed cases of H5N1 in people: a boy in Hunan province who recovered, and two women who died in Anhui province, the latest of which was announced on Thursday. There may be another probable case in Hunan.
But Masato Tashiro, head of virology at Tokyos National Institute of Infectious Disease a WHO-collaborating centre for bird flu told the meeting of virologists in Marburg, Germany, on 19 November that we have been systematically deceived. His comments were reported in the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
He told the stunned meeting, called to mark the retirement of a senior German virologist, that there have been several dozen outbreaks in people, 300 confirmed deaths and 3000 people placed in isolation with suspected cases.
Severe restrictions
Tashiro could not be reached for comment today. The newspaper reported that he said the numbers came from sources he trusted, while he was in Hunan province for the WHO, working with Chinese investigators on the recent H5N1 outbreak there.
He said five Chinese medical personnel had been arrested for trying to report these cases, according to the paper. China enforced severe restrictions on the investigation and reporting of suspected cases of bird flu in June 2005.
These rumours have been investigated, and weve been told by the Chinese Ministry of Health that theres no foundation to them, Dick Thompson, a spokesman for the World Health Organization, told New Scientist.
Emergency workers
Virologists consider the relative absence of human cases of bird flu in China unusual, given its widespread infection in birds. China has reported poultry outbreaks in twenty counties all across the country since mid-October, the latest being on Thursday.
The WHO told the official Chinese news agency Xinhua last week that the virus causing the outbreak in Hunan is the same as the one in Vietnam and Thailand, where H5N1 has caused 113 confirmed human cases and 55 deaths so far.
There are other unconfirmed reports of human cases in China. Boxun News, an independent Chinese website, reported this week that 77 workers brought in to help control rampant H5N1 outbreaks in poultry in Liaoning province in November have died of the virus, listing 14 names.
Boxun reported the extent of the outbreak in wild birds at Qinghai Lake in central China in May, and alleged then that 120 people had been put in stringent hospital isolation in a nearby town, possibly with bird flu.

In Liaoning Province of China, 6 people were infected with H5N1 Avian Flu and had died recently, according to Nov. 20 report by an overseas Chinese language news site, Boxun, quoting the article posted by a poster.
Six victims were 4 students in Beining City, 1 epidemic-prevention worker, and another person whose identity is unknown. According to the post, the number of dead people from H5N1 Avian Flu in Liaoning Province has reached 77, including the six new victims. Furthermore, at one of domestic Chinese Internet site, the name of 14 migrant farm workers killed by Avian Flu were published on Nov. 19.
According to the post at Boxun.com, government gives monetary compensation to victim's family in return for not divulging the nature of victim's death. However, if it gets ever revealed, not a single cent of compensation would be given, and would be arrested for endangering social order and security.
Of the 6 dead, the family of epidemic-prevention worker were given 240,000 yuan($30,000), and other victim's family were given 120,000 yuan($15,000). Those families who got less complained to Beijing government, and this led to the news leak to others.
The number of people who were suspected of Avian Flu and underwent a medical test or were quarantined for a short period of time has exceeded 150,000. Furthermore, rumors are spreading in the local area, which say that Avian Flu can now spread from person to person. This plunged the local residents into panic. The number of infected people in Liaoning Province is estimated to exceed those of Qing-hai Province during the previous Avian Flu outbreak(a few months ago.)
The name of 14 dead victims were published in a post at an Chinese domestic Internet site called 'Tienya Forum.' It said that most of the dead were farm workers from Sichuan, Hunan, Anhui Province, who were working at the area of Liaoning Province where Avian Flu is raging. The poster who published the list said that he did so in order to inform the victim's family of what happened. Its detail are as follows:
According to migrant farm workers in Liaoning Province, most of them has died from H5N1 Avian Flu or been placed in quarantine. If a person dies from Avian Flu and he does not have his family in the local area, he was immediately cremated, leading the victim's family to believe that he is just missing. Due to tight information control, I could only obtain the names of 14 dead victims. The list is as follows. All died from H5N1 Avian Flu and their bodies were cremated.

So far there have only been a few cases of human-to-human transfers of the virus, but they had happened in bird farms.
China has announced that for 20 days specialists have been testing an anti-bird flu shot. However it would be at least two years before an effective bird flu prevention vaccine appears on the market.

Согласно данным Минздрава КНР, в Китае абсолютно точно установлены факты мутации вируса птичьего гриппа. Представитель министерства Мао Цюньань сегодня официально заявил, что в Китае от больных людей выделены штаммы вируса H5N1, которые по своим свойствам отличаются от таковых, выявленных у заразившихся этой болезнью на территории Вьетнама. Однако, он также сообщил, что данный факт пока не является поводом для серьезных опасений, так как эта мутация не изменила геном вируса до такой степени, чтобы позволить инфекции передаваться от человека к человеку.
Напомним, что согласно одна из теоретических научных гипотез выражает худшие опасения ученых. Согласно этому предположению, в ходе многократных пассажей среди птиц и людей вирус H5N1 может особым образом мутировать и приобрести свойство распространяться среди человеческой популяции, например, воздушно-капельным путем. Следовательно, в таком случае по способу передачи он станет похожим на вирус обычного гриппа, который, как известно, имеет довольно широкую область циркуляции. Это может иметь очень неблагоприятные последствия для человека, ведь заболевание, вызываемое вирусом птичьего гриппа, вполне может протекать в тяжелых формах. Кроме того, пока наука не располагает достаточными сведениями о возможном спектре осложнений и перехода заболевания в хроническую форму.
Контролировать и, тем более, предупреждать процесс возникновения мутационной изменчивости в популяциях вируса, осваивающего все новые и новые территории, практически невозможно даже при помощи самых современных достижений в области вирусологии, молекулярной биологии и генной инженерии. Получается, медицина почти бессильна перед природным напором птичьего гриппа. Сейчас врачам остается только дальше совершенствовать процедуру диагностики заболевания, расширять спектр противовирусных препаратов и готовиться к новой атаке H5N1, пока вирус еще относительно "миролюбив", и нет риска заразиться птичьим гриппом через полотенце или поцелуй.

China: 77 Avian Flu Patients Dead in Liaoning Province...Victim's Name Published on Internet

In Liaoning Province of China, 6 people were infected with H5N1 Avian Flu and had died recently, according to Nov. 20 report by an overseas Chinese language news site, Boxun, quoting the article posted by a poster.
Six victims were 4 students in Beining City, 1 epidemic-prevention worker, and another person whose identity is unknown. According to the post, the number of dead people from H5N1 Avian Flu in Liaoning Province has reached 77, including the six new victims. Furthermore, at one of domestic Chinese Internet site, the name of 14 migrant farm workers killed by Avian Flu were published on Nov. 19.
According to the post at Boxun.com, government gives monetary compensation to victim's family in return for not divulging the nature of victim's death. However, if it gets ever revealed, not a single cent of compensation would be given, and would be arrested for endangering social order and security.
Of the 6 dead, the family of epidemic-prevention worker were given 240,000 yuan($30,000), and other victim's family were given 120,000 yuan($15,000). Those families who got less complained to Beijing government, and this led to the news leak to others.
The number of people who were suspected of Avian Flu and underwent a medical test or were quarantined for a short period of time has exceeded 150,000. Furthermore, rumors are spreading in the local area, which say that Avian Flu can now spread from person to person. This plunged the local residents into panic. The number of infected people in Liaoning Province is estimated to exceed those of Qing-hai Province during the previous Avian Flu outbreak(a few months ago.)
The name of 14 dead victims were published in a post at an Chinese domestic Internet site called 'Tienya Forum.' It said that most of the dead were farm workers from Sichuan, Hunan, Anhui Province, who were working at the area of Liaoning Province where Avian Flu is raging. The poster who published the list said that he did so in order to inform the victim's family of what happened. Its detail are as follows:
According to migrant farm workers in Liaoning Province, most of them has died from H5N1 Avian Flu or been placed in quarantine. If a person dies from Avian Flu and he does not have his family in the local area, he was immediately cremated, leading the victim's family to believe that he is just missing. Due to tight information control, I could only obtain the names of 14 dead victims. The list is as follows. All died from H5N1 Avian Flu and their bodies were cremated.

Китай отвергает информацию о том, что якобы в стране скрываются реальные данные о количестве заболевших птичьим гриппом людей, заявил в среду на пресс-конференции министр здравоохранения КНР Гао Цян (Gao Qiang).
В ряде западных СМИ ранее появились сведения со ссылкой на японского специалиста о том, что в Китае скрываются данные о реальном количестве заболевших птичьим гриппом людей, передает РИА Новости.
"В Китае не существует проблемы сокрытия информации о заболевании", - сказал Гао Цян.
Министр здравоохранения также назвал недостоверными появившиеся на одном новостном веб-сайте сообщения о том, что в северо-восточной провинции Китая Ляонин (Liaoning) зафиксировано свыше 70 случаев заболевания людей птичьим гриппом, в том числе 14 - со смертельным исходом. Гао Цян сообщил, что на этом сайте приводились чрезвычайно подробные сведения о заболевших, включая их возраст, имена, адреса.
"Минздрав моментально начал проверку этих сведений и выяснилось, что, например, семерых из указанных людей просто не существует в природе", - сказал министр. Некоторые уже давно не проживают в Ляонине, заявил он, добавив, что проверка продолжается. "Мне сложно сказать, какую цель преследуют эти веб-сайты, кроме того, что, может быть, они надеются на дестабилизацию общества", - сказал Гао Цян.

KIEV, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Officials in Ukraine, so far free of bird flu, have sent experts to investigate the sudden deaths of more than 1,500 birds in the Crimea peninsula, the Agriculture Minister said on Friday.
Oleksander Baranivsky, speaking to 1+1 television, said the birds were found in a half dozen villages in the peninsula jutting into the Black Sea. He gave no details on the type of birds or other information.
"At the moment we have 1,621 dead birds. Tonight, the situation will become more clear," Baranivsky told the station by telephone.
"Measures are being taken. Experts have been sent there. If cases of any specific virus are found, further measures will be introduced."
The channel said the sale of privately raised domestic poultry had been banned in Crimea.
Romania on Friday discovered new cases of bird flu in the the Danube Delta it shares with Ukraine and samples were being sent to a British laboratory to determine whether the infected birds had the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain.
Romania became the first country in mainland Europe to detect the H5N1 virus in two villages in the delta.
Bird flu has also been found in several regions of Russia, Ukraine's northern neighbour.
Ukrainian officials have performed analyses on thousands of domestic and wild birds but detected no cases of bird flu. All hunting of birds has been halted and residents have been told to keep their stocks indoors to prevent contact with wild birds.

- Да на краю поля нашла кучу дохлых кур (показывает рукой на уровне побольше метра от земли). Кто-то выбросил. Если собаки бродячие растащат, представляете, что будет?
Заправщик направил за телефоном ее в окно к кассиру, и прокомментировал: "Этого еще не хватало!"
Недалеко расположено одно из крупных птицеводческих предприятий. Да, думаю, у частного лица вряд ли столько кур наберется. Так что грипп там или нет, а элементарные требования санитарных норм выполняются, похоже, не всегда.

В Крыму обнаружен "птичий грипп"
"Птичий грипп" обнаружен на территории Крыма. Как сообщили в Министерстве сельского хозяйства Украины, вирус выявлен в Советском и Нижнегорском районах. Ранее там был отмечен массовый падеж домашней птицы, в основном, кур и гусей. Всего в этих районах погибло около 1,5 тыс. птиц.
Предварительные анализы показали, что причиной их гибели стал вирус типа H5. Теперь пробы биоматериала будут направлены для исследования в лаборатории Италии и Великобритании. Дальнейшие анализы должны показать, является ли обнаруженный вирус опасным для человека штаммом H5N1.
В связи с выявлением в Крыму "птичьего гриппа", глава администрации президента Украины Олег Рыбачук созвал специальное заседание для обсуждения ситуации и выработки дальнейших мер, передает АР.
В октябре с.г. восемь украинских регионов были отнесены в зону риска в связи с регистрацией "птичьего гриппа" в соседних странах. В зоне риска, в которую вошли Крым, Винницкая, Одесская, Николаевская, Херсонская, Черновицкая, Закарпатская и Ивано-Франковская области, кроме усиленных мер безопасности на птицефермах и дезинфекции на границе, проводился мониторинг птиц. Отстрел диких птиц был запрещен.
Как отмечал более месяца назад украинский министр аграрной политики Александр Баранивский, через Украину проходят два из 14 путей миграции птиц, поэтому вероятность занесения "птичьего гриппа" в страну очень велика. В Румынии 17 октября был выявлен случай заболевания "птичьим гриппом" в местечке, расположенном в 10 км от украинской границы.
Международное эпизоотическое бюро в 2004г. обнаружило "птичий грипп" в 10 странах. В 2005г. высокопатогенный вирус был обнаружен уже в 17 странах

В связи с выявлением в Крыму "птичьего гриппа", глава администрации президента Украины Олег Рыбачук созвал специальное заседание для обсуждения ситуации и выработки дальнейших мер, передает АР.
В октябре с.г. восемь украинских регионов были отнесены в зону риска в связи с регистрацией "птичьего гриппа" в соседних странах. В зоне риска, в которую вошли Крым, Винницкая, Одесская, Николаевская, Херсонская, Черновицкая, Закарпатская и Ивано-Франковская области, кроме усиленных мер безопасности на птицефермах и дезинфекции на границе, проводился мониторинг птиц. Отстрел диких птиц был запрещен.
Как отмечал более месяца назад украинский министр аграрной политики Александр Баранивский, через Украину проходят два из 14 путей миграции птиц, поэтому вероятность занесения "птичьего гриппа" в страну очень велика. В Румынии 17 октября был выявлен случай заболевания "птичьим гриппом" в местечке, расположенном в 10 км от украинской границы.
Международное эпизоотическое бюро в 2004г. обнаружило "птичий грипп" в 10 странах. В 2005г. высокопатогенный вирус был обнаружен уже в 17 странах

Reuters has a chilling story from Vietnam: avian flu victims' lungs are clogged with pus and surrounded by fluid.
Based on chest X-rays performed on 14 Vietnamese bird flu patients admitted to Ho Chi Minh City Hospital -- nine of whom died -- researchers at the University of Oxford in England found shared abnormalities that were good predictors of whether the disease would be fatal.
The infection from the H5N1 avian flu virus caused multiple lung infections, "which usually represents pus and infection in patients with fever and a cough," radiologist Dr. Nagmi Qureshi said. "We also discovered that the severity of these findings turned out to be a good predictor of patient mortality."
The story goes on to report that survivors' lungs resemble those of SARS victims, only worse: H5N1 resulted in fluid around the lungs, enlarged lymph nodes, and actual cavities in the lung tissue, as well as SARS-like scar tissue.

Dao Trong Bich, deputy director of the medical centre in Thai Thuy District in northern Thai Binh province, said the woman had cared for a 21-year-old man who tested positive for the H5N1 bird flu virus and remains in critical condition.
The 41-year-old nurse, also from Thai Binh province, was hospitalised on Thursday in Hanoi with a high fever, coughing and a lung infection typical bird flu symptoms.
Specimens have been taken from her for testing, and results are expected this week, the doctor said. She is in stable condition.
If tests confirm it, she would be the second Vietnamese health care worker to be sickened by the bird flu virus.

Dr. Charoen Chuchottaworn, an avian-flu expert at the Public Health Ministry, said doctors reviewing the cases were alerted by the very mild symptoms present in both patients, neither of whom had had any recent contact with birds or poultry.
The doctors are unsure as to how either of the infected contracted the disease and have raised the possibility that the virus has traded its pathogenicity for ease of transmission.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the disease is spreading so rapidly, particularly in the capital of Jakarta, some health officials strongly suspect the long-dreaded mutation has already occurred.
"There are just too many people who have it," said one doctor. "In many cases, it is difficult to establish any contact with birds."
Another official said the flu has "spread all over the city."
The latest victim confirmed officially by the Ministry of Health is a 25-year-old woman. She was treated at Tangerang Hospital before being transferred to Sulianti Saroso. The woman had difficulty breathing and a breathing tube had to be inserted.
The World Health Organization-sanctioned laboratory in Hong Kong has so far confirmed 13 bird flu cases in humans in Indonesia, with eight people dying from the virus.
Separately, Minister of Health Siti Fadila Supari said Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche had given Indonesia approval to produce its antiviral drug Tamiflu to fight bird flu in humans.
So far the government has relied on donors such as Singapore, Japan and Australia for its supply of Tamiflu.
The government also said it would launch a yearlong operation against bird flu, involving the military, house-to-house checks and mass culls of birds across the country.
"The president has said that until 2006, for one year, we will intensively eradicate bird flu virus," said Minister of Agriculture Anton Apriyantono.
He said the yearlong program would include weekly checks of backyard farms and larger farms in Greater Jakarta for infected birds.
The Jakarta Animal Husbandry, Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Agency today destroyed some 500 chickens and pet birds in Utan Kayu, where a number of infected birds have been found.
From about 2,000 tests conducted by the agency in 30 of the capital's 267 subdistricts, dozens of infected birds were found in the subdistricts of Ceger, Utan Kayu, Pondok Kelapa, Duren Sawit and Cipinang Melayu, all in East Jakarta, as well as in Sunter Jaya and Cilincing in North Jakarta, Kapuk in West Jakarta, and Petojo in Central Jakarta.
With one small genetic adjustment in Influenza A, or H5N1, millions of people could die, warns World Health Organization Regional Director for the Western Pacific Shigeru Omi. Omi has called for health ministers and representatives to launch an all-out war on the deadly strain.
If the virus acquires sufficient human genes, allowing transmission from one person to another, an estimated 2 million to 7.4 million people around the world could die, the WHO estimates.
Some health officials make even more dire predictions. They point to the great flu pandemic of 1918-1919, which killed far more people worldwide than died in World War I an estimated 40 to 50 million people.
There are more signs the virus is spreading outward from Asia and through Europe. Romania appears to be the hardest hit.
Three more villages in eastern Romania have been quarantined following the discovery of an H5 strain of avian influenza in poultry in one of the villages. The Romanian Ministry of Agriculture suspects the presence of bird flu in the other villages but is awaiting confirmation of test results from the United Kingdom.
Culling has begun in the area, and authorities estimate that 9,500 birds will be killed.
Romanian Agriculture Minister Gheorghe Flutur said today that 10,000 birds have been slaughtered following the discovery this week of three cases of avian flu in the Danube Delta.
"The villages of Periprava as well as Dudescu and Bumbacari have been placed under quarantine and the soil has been disinfected," he told journalists. "We have also alerted the Ukrainian authorities, since the village of Periprava is only three kilometers (two miles) from the frontier."
Although the latest cases have been identified as the H5 variety, more tests are being carried out to find out if the virus belongs to the deadly H5NI strain that has killed more than 60 people in Asia and is feared as a possible source of a human flu pandemic.
A member of the national animal health authority, Florica Durlea, warned that the risk of avian flu remained, because new waves of migratory birds are expected as a result of mild temperatures.
The Danube Delta is a stopping off point for birds flying from central Asia and Russia.
So far, 12 outbreaks of bird flu have been detected in Romania.
In China, a team from the World Health Organization investigating the deaths from avian influenza said the extent of the problem in the country -- and elsewhere -- may be worse than initially thought.
Dick Thompson, a WHO spokesman in Geneva, told the New York Times, "In some cases the surveillance system may not be there. We're not nosing around, but we may be able to provide (China with) some technical expertise."
The H5N1 bird flu virus has killed at least 68 people in Asia since 2003.
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt announced the purchase of additional vaccine that could be used in the event of a potential influenza pandemic.
The department has awarded a $62.5 million contract to Chiron Corp. to manufacture an avian influenza vaccine designed to protect against the H5N1 influenza virus strain. The number of individuals who could be protected by the newly contracted vaccine is still to be determined by ongoing clinical studies.
"An influenza vaccine effective against the H5N1 virus is our best hope of protecting the American people from a virus for which they have no immunity," said Leavitt. "This contract will increase our stockpile of the vaccine and is a continuation of our aggressive multi-pronged approach to a potentially critical public health challenge."
This purchase builds on the department's current plans to buy enough H5N1 influenza vaccine for 20 million people and enough influenza antivirals for another 20 million people. These supplies of vaccine and antiviral treatment will be placed in the nation's Strategic National Stockpile where they will be available for use should an influenza pandemic occur. Recently, HHS awarded a $100 million contract to sanofi pasteur, the vaccines business of the sanofi-aventis Group, for avian flu vaccine.
